The First Networked Presidency?

Joe Trippi, pioneer of using online tools in political campaigns, made a very interesting statement last Friday. He said, we've seen the use of radio by FDR and television by JFK, but now "we are going to see a networked president."

Mr. Trippi was speaking at a panel discussion at the New Politics Institute's all day event called New Tools and New Audiences. The successful campaign will be"bottom-up, not top-down," Mr. Trippi told the audience. This grassroots mobilization is what he was able to harness in the Dean campaign, and he said its what Barak Obama has been able to utilize in this race. But as impressive as the Obama campaign is (online), he said, "a few years from now there will be a campaign that make's Obama's campaign look like chump change. But things can't take off unless the people in the campaign understand that we need to take the bottom up approach."

And what would a networked president look like?

"We might have a whitehouse.gov that look more like MyBarak. When the next president gets in office and says, 'here's what I want to do with health care,' we'll instantly see sites go up to start gathering support and contribution. I think this will happen whether is is Obama, Clinton, or McCain. Everything will change- the way they interact with network news, cable, everything."
